Free sewing tutorial and pattern girls skirt




I made this skirt for my daughter. I made the same skirt earlier out of jersey. Because you sew a skirt out of jersey slightly different as a skirt out of cotton, I made a new tutorial for this skirt. Sizes range from newborn to 10Y.

Materials:
* Cotton fabric - Soft Cactus, Oh Deer (skirt)
   75 cm x 35 cm (30 inch x 14 inch) (newborn - 3 months)
   80 cm x 35 cm (32 inch x 14 inch) (6 months)
   80 cm x 40 cm (32 inch x 16 inch) (9 months)
   85 cm x 40 cm (44 inch x 16 inch) (12 months)
   90 cm x 40 cm (36 inch x 16 inch) (18 months/ 2T)
   100 cm x 45 cm (40 inv x 18 inch) (3T/ 4Y)
   105 cm x 50 cm (42 inch x 20 inch) (5Y)
   110 cm x 50 cm (44 inch x 20 inch) (6Y)
   115 cm x 50 cm (46 inch x 20 inch) (7Y)
   115 cm x 55 cm (46 inch x 22 inch) (8Y)
   120 cm x 55 cm (48 inch x 22 inch) (9Y)
   125 cm x 60 cm (50 inch x 24 inch) (10Y
* Elastic waistband
  - 1 cm (1/2 inch) wide (size newborn - 9 months)
  - 2 cm (4/5 inch) wide (size 12 months - 6Y)
  - 3 cm (1 1/5 inch) wide (size 7Y - 10 Y)

Download the free sewing pattern from the list below.  Set your printer settings to A4 paper.

Step 1: Draw the pattern.
Print the sewing pattern in landscape mode at 100% on A4 paper or US Letter. Draw the pattern with an aqua trickmarker on the back of the fabric. The pattern is without seam allowance. Add 1 cm (5/8 inch) seam allowance.  Add 2 cm (1 inch) seam allowance at the bottom of the skirt.

Step 2: Cut the fabric.
Cut a front piece, a back piece and a waistband out of the fabric.

Step 3: Sew the sides of the skirt.
With right sides facing pin down the back and front piece. Sew the sides of the skirt. Serge the seams.

Step 4: Fold the seam allowance to the inside.
Fold the seam allowance of the bottom of the dress to the inside and pin down.

Step 5: Sew the hem in place.
Turn right-side out. Sew the hem in place. Use a a twin needle.

Step 6: Waistband.
With right sides facing, fold the waistband in half. Sew together. Trim.

Step 7: Pin waistband down.
Turn skirt and waistband inside out. Pin down waistband and skirt.

Step 8: Sew waistband.
Sew together.

Step 9: Fold seam allowance to the inside.
Fold the seam allowance of the waistband tot the inside and pin down.


Step 10: Fold the elastic waistband in half.
With right sides facing, fold the elastic waistband in half. Sew together.

Step 11: Sew waistband.
Turn right-side out. Fold the waistband over the elastic waistband. Fold the seam allowance of the waistband to the inside and pin down. Sew together.
